“Hassan’s wars” wins at Vukovar Film Festival

Documentary film “Hassan’s wars” directed by Robert Bubalo won the award Zlatni Šlep for the best documentary film at 19th Vukovar Film Festival in tough competition of 16 documentaries.

This film about Večernjak's journalist, political commentator and war reporter Hassan Haidar Diab impressed the jury made up of its president Perica Martinović and actors Ana-Marija Bokor Vrdoljak and Andrej Dojkić, who unanimously declared it the best documentary of this year's festival, emphasizing the dynamism of the story, unobtrusive direction and the visual aspect of the film.

An emotional story about a man who found the meaning of life, replaced the gun with a pen, and is now protected by the police from radical Islamists, as he once was himself, belongs to absolute peaks of documentary form, and the audience in Vukovar had the opportunity to watch it at the very closing of the festival.

The film crew led by the director Robert Bubalo and the main protagonist Hassan Haidar Diab accepted the award Zlatni šlep, and in his winning speech Hassan apologised to the audience for the amount of curse that they had heard from him in the film.

In the fiction competition, the award Zlatni šlep for the best film went to the Hungarian "Checkmate" directed by Barnabás Tóth.
The nineteenth edition of one of the most important film festivals in Croatia closed on Sunday, September 1, and was enriched by an extremely strong official competition of feature and documentary films. Among the total of 44 films screened in various categories, 35 of them were in competition for the Zlatni šlep award for the best feature or documentary film.
