Ivana Guberina: Nobody was indifferent to the film about Dražen
The documentary film 'Our Little Boy' about the basketball genius Dražen Petroivć is going to be screened on the last day of the 24th Mediterranean Film Festival in Široki Brijeg. The director Ivana Guberina brought a new side of life, career and times this basketball genius lived in. His connection to the city and the people of Šibenik is especially emphasised.
How did you get the idea to make this film?
The idea behind this film came after the successful film 'Šibenik za sva vrimena', together with Ivica Poljičak, State Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, with whom I collaborated. I’ve been working in the school that Dražen has attended for 20 years now. For us in Šibenik, Dražen was and remains a huge pride, and a film about him was a kind of logical step after the film about this city.
This film is different than the other films about Dražen so far. What is the difference?
This is the question you need to ask the audience. I listened to my heart, and did it in my way. I have my views, my ideas... When you manage to make a film that is literally bursting with emotions, with truth, with a time that has disappeared, when the audience feels it, you judge for yourself what it is like.
What are the reactions from Dražen’s family, did you have their ‘approval’?
Before the very start I contacted Mrs. Biserka Petrović. I presented her the screenplay and I got her approval, without that I wouldn’t have started. We talked about everything and we were in contact often. Of course, I couldn't wait for the reactions of the family. After the premiere in Šibenik, no one remained indifferent. I think the movie thrilled everyone.
Thirty years have passed since the tragic death of Dražen Petrović - should a film like this have been made earlier, or is now the 'right' time for it?
I think that it needs to be talked about Dražen. His life is a message to all of us that success does not come overnight.
How long did the whole process take and what were the biggest difficulties you encountered?
After three years of active work, sleepless nights, brilliant ideas, looking into the known and the unknown, realization of the impossible and seemingly unattainable, the film saw the light of day. I give myself the right to say our project. The project of all those who are responsible for the realization of this documentary film. They say that everything that requires effort, time, sacrifice and a lot of work pays off in the end. Giving up was never an option. It took courage and faith.
How much did you learn about Dražen during this process, something that you didn't know before this film?
I knew Dražen when I was a little girl. The people of Sibenik are known for how much they love and know about Dražen. But, of course, you always discover and find out something new.
This is your sixth film – you are a teacher, how come you entered the film industry?
I started making documentaries the moment I decided to leave my students with a permanent record of their growing up and a memory of the beginning of their education. It all started with making memories, one permanent recording that brought me to the place I am today. I found myself, maybe a gift that I have which I can pass on to others in a completely different way. It is something that makes my life better, of higher quality.
After the premiere screening in Šibenik, where else did you show the film about Dražen and what were the reactions?
The film premiered in Šibenik at the Barone Fortress, then at the Vukovar Film Festival and in Zagreb on the occasion of the presentation of the Dražen Petrović Award organized by the Croatian Olympic Committee. The film, in the true sense of the word, leaves no one indifferent. The audience is delighted, the long-lasting applause that is repeated on several occasions, and the emotions that can be felt, so that even today they bring wonderful memories in me, memories that I will never forget.
A new project you are working on?
It is about the cultural heritage of the city of Šibenik. I will connect the history and future of a city, its culture and art, changes that affect the lives of all of us and make us proud citizens of Šibenik, about which thousands of stories can be told.
