Actors are needed today more than ever to point out the anomalies of society
Ornela Vištica, an actress from Mostar, is a member of the jury for short documentary film at 24th Mediterranean Film Festival. Along with her, the young director from Split, Karmen Obrdalj, and the Slovenian film director, Igor Zupe, are also on the jury.
Was the choice of acting obvious or there were some doubts? What was this journey like?
I have never doubted. Every free moment I spent citing and practicing poetry. It seemed like a waste of time to many, but that's how I expressed myself during growing up. Even at the age of 12, the actress Tatjana Feher gave me a prize at the competition for the song 'You who have innocent hands' by Vesna Parun. Tatjana was Branko Gavella’s last student, who was born in Zagreb but life brought her to Mostar, so that many years later she would prepare a little girl for Zagreb with a monologue from Krleža’s works. I remember that she was crying when I first told her that I was accepted for acting studies. Ivo Škarić, a Croatian academic and linguist, also contributed to my journey. They were the tail wind, people who are no longer with us, but they really guided my path and I can't forget them just like Dragan Despot, who was there for every advice and support. I am always grateful to him.
A role that, for now, you would single out as one of those 'turning points' in your career?
The role of Marijana Margetić from Krleža’s 'Vučjak', which I played at the entrance exam, was a turning point. It is still a role I would like to play until the end.
What is the position of actresses/actors in Croatia today? What do you think are some of the biggest problems?
There are a lot of actors, and there is a great poem by Tomislav Durbešić, a professor at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb, which says that actors have always been despised by the authorities. How they shouted 'my salary', not knowing that they pay themselves with play, nerves and passion and that they abolish the contempt of the whole world with stage power. For a healthier and better society, actors are needed today more than ever, in order to point out the anomalies of society. Without culture, hardly any society can exist.
What was your biggest challenge?
Maybe the fact that I entered the great television machinery at a very young age.
Author or theatre company whose offer you would accept at first, without thinking?
I have been a member of the Kerempuh Satirical Theatre for several years, I believe that we take good care of each other, for any serious offer I would first talk to Kerempuh.
Who is your favourite actress, and the greatest inspiration?
My inspiration is people. Various, and often I myself am a camera for people. As actresses, I like Juliette Binoche, Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster.
The film, theatre or both?
Theatre is my great and first love, and a movie can take me away for hours and hours, just like a good book, I forget about time. I can watch "Who sings does not think of evil" or "The Mandolin of Captain Korelius" or "Balkan Spy" a hundred times. I love 'Mystic River' and every 'Godfather'.
At the moment you are finishing your studies in International Relations and Diplomacy at the Libertas International University in Zagreb. What attracted you to this?
Education, knowledge, and if I have the opportunity I would like to do something good for society in terms of cultural diplomacy.
The project you are currently working on?
I am currently working on plays in my theatre, I recently finished filming the series 'Ja chef' in Slovenia with an episodic role. I do some smaller jobs that make me happy, I travel a lot, I write and I have one more exam to finish.
