Iva Kraljević: MFF is my first festival
The young and promising theatre, film and television actress Iva Kraljević now has the role of a jury member of the 23rd Mediterranean Film Festival. This is the occasion to talk with Iva about this and some other roles, profession, ambitions and challenges that young actors face today.
You enrolled at the Academy of Dramatic Arts relatively late, at the age of 27?
The fact that I enrolled the Academy later is a combination of different circumstances, but in the end it turned out that I entered exactly when I needed to and when I was definitely ready. This is the way I see it now. It seems to me that maturity helped me during my studies and I bought myself an extra ten years of life by studying at that age with younger colleagues. Of course, there was some questioning, but the desire and need for artistic expression and curiosity for emotions and diversity in every sense have followed me my whole life.
What is the status of young actors in Croatia?
I don't know what it was like in the past, except from some stories of older colleagues, but I know that today it is not very simple. There are so many of us, but too few projects are being filmed, and the independent scene does not have enough money. I am lucky that I work a lot, in various theatres, and I have had continuity of work since the third year of the Academy, but that is no guarantee for the future. Uncertainty is always present. I was aware of that when I came to the Academy. I believe in work, dedication, good organization and program planning. I would deal with that if I were in a position to change something in the system.
You are currently working as an assistant at the Academy of Dramatic Arts. Is Zagreb enough for you? Would you try your hand at the career abroad?
It is nice for me in Zagreb now, which does not mean that there is not a possibility of going somewhere abroad. Who knows? If it comes to that, I will think about it. This is where I started and somehow feel at home. My colleagues, who I love and want to work with and develop, are also here. Working at the Academy is a great responsibility, but also a game and a constant reminder of how you must always go further and push your own limits, not stand still and not be satisfied with what you have already achieved.
A theatre company whose offer you wouldn't refuse? At first thought.
The Zagreb Youth Theatre is my favourite and the place where I would like to work. It is an ensemble with which I want to create and share the scene.Your greatest challenge so far? I performed in my first professional play in France. It was the play 'Gospel' by the great European director Pippa Delbon, produced by Croatian National Theatre Zagreb. As a CNT scholarship holder, I was sent to France on a fifteen-day tour as a substitute for a colleague who had to return to Zagreb. It was quite natural and normal for me at that moment, but today I know that I was extremely lucky to have experienced all of this and received such a rare opportunity.
Who is your favourite actress and greatest inspiration?
Uh, there are more of them and the list keeps changing. I have various phases, but there are always great Anna Magnani, Monica Vitti, Isabelle Huppert, Laura Dern... and I draw inspiration mostly from music, books, pictures, everyday situations I see on the street or tram and of course from leisure.
Theatre, film or both?
Both the theatre and film. As long as it is good. The difference is only in the preparation and process, at least in my case so far.Maybe right now I would like to film more, simply because I haven't shot as much as I would like.
Is there anything that you would never do in this job?
I would not do what I don’t think I am ready for or don't have the tools to do it, but all these things can be communicated, at least it has worked for me so far. I am not afraid to say what I think, and I admit very easily if I am wrong. That is how I function.
The project you are currently working on?
I am currently working on a new play at Eurokaz. "The Dance of Death" based on the work of August Strindberg, directed by Borna Baletić. The premiere is in November and I am really enjoying the process. I recently shot a short film with Luka Galešić, 'My Idiot Husband', which should be released in a few months, and I am shooting the second season of the series 'The Godfathers'.
Not long ago, you had the opportunity to perform in front of the local audience in Široki Brijeg with the play 'Jel' tako Zorane'. Now you are returning in the role of one of the members of the jury at this year's Mediterranean Film Festival. Is it true that the biggest nervousness and criticism is in front of your own people?
Yes, I had a huge stage fright. I was watched by people who have known me all my life and I played in front of two hundred people I know personally. This is an unusual situation. It was very touching, I would love to play again. Who knows, maybe there will be a guest performance again. I was happy when they invited me to be on the jury because it is the first film festival I have ever been to, the festival I have been attending since I was twelve, and the festival where I watched some of the first documentaries and European films in general.
