A story from a different time: Another award for ‘Sisters’
Zdenko Jurilj's documentary film 'Sisters' won the award for the Best minority coproduction at the 28 Croatian Film Days, traditional festival of the best domestic films in all genres.
The main jury, composed of Jasna Zastavniković, Filip Tot and Mia Melcher, awarded the film with the following explanation: “How to tell a story from a different time, and to distance from the usual procedures and stay innovative? In line with Chris Marker and his La Jetée from 1962, who tells the story of the future in photographs, Zdenko Jurilj tells the story of the past using black and white landscapes and succeeds in making the atmosphere become the medium of the film expression in which the emotion guarantees the authenticity of the events.”
At this year's Croatian Film Days, which took place from June 14th to 18th in Zagreb, 106 films were screened in the prestigious competition program, and the Grand Prix was awarded to Nebojša Slijepčević's film 'Srbenka'.
This is the second prize for Zdenko Jurilj’s documentary film. ‘Sisters’ were awarded a special mention by the jury at the 16th Bosnian-Herzegovinian Film Festival BHFF that was held in New York.
The film ‘Sisters’ made in ‘Kadar’ production from Široki Brijeg depicts the destiny of sisters Šima and Draženka Čuljak, who fell into a deep pit on a cold snowy morning of January 6, 1985 when Herzegovina was struck by unusually severe winter, on their way to take the bus from Bogodol village, 20 km away from Mostar. They stayed there for seven nights and eight days at the temperature below minus 20° with no food or water.
The film had its premiere screening at Sarajevo Film Festival, while its Herzegovinian premiere was at the 19th Mediterranean Film Festival in Široki Brijeg.
