Home authors’ films: 'Sisters' open the 19 MFF
Documentary film ‘Sisters’, directed by Zdenko Jurilj, and ‘Tobacco Trails’, directed by Mirko Pivčević, will be screened within the Mediterranean Film Festival off programme ‘Home Authors’. After the premiere screening at the Sarajevo Film Festival, the film “Sisters” will open the 19th edition of the MFF on August 22 at 9 p.m. in the Open air Cinema in Široki Brijeg.
The film brings an extremely interesting story about Sisters Draženka and Šima Čuljak, who set off from Bogodol village on foot to Široki Brijeg in January 1985, to catch a bus to Mostar. In heavy snowfall, not knowing the road very well, they fell into a deep hole where they spent seven days without food and water, dressed in jeans jackets at extremely low temperatures.
On the seventh day, the hunters who heard their cries for help saved them. Their life was saved, but their legs were amputated in the lower limbs. The film was produced by Kadar production from Široki Brijeg.
Documentary film “Tobacco Trails” will be screened within the Mediterranean Film Festival off programme on Friday, August 24 at 9 p.m., in the open air cinema. The film is based on the script of the award-winning writer Josip Mlakić, and it brings the story about the people who maintained their own and their families’ existence by smuggling tobacco from Herzegovina to Central Bosnia.
The surviving witnesses vividly evoked memories of the ways and over which barriers they earned the money over 50 years ago by smuggling the tobacco under the cover of night, rain, snow and storms, avoiding the repressive police force from the era of the former Yugoslavia.
How dangerous this smuggling route was is shown in the testimonies of police murders of certain members of smugglers’ families on this route, which no one has ever been accused of. The testimonies of the witnesses in this short documentary are illustrated in the scenes of 'smugglers' filmed on the picturesque and snowy curved areas of the mountains Raduša, Vran, Čvrsnica, Makljen… The film was produced by Scena and Olimp productions and in cooperation with Kadar production from Široki Brijeg.
